Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the lead entity within the United Nations system for coordinating activities in the field of human settlements and urbanisation. Its activities contribute to the overall objective of the United Nations system to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development within the context of a rapidly urbanising world. UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) was established in 2011 in Cairo, Egypt, and provides technical cooperation and capacity building for 18 countries across the Arab region. The Regional Office promotes and implements policies, programmes and operational projects in UN-Habitat’s focus areas, at regional, national, and local levels, aimed at achieving sustainable urban development in the countries of the region, and provide technical cooperation services, upon request from governments. 

The UN-HABITAT Public Space Regional Office for Arab States, internship is for 6 months

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 – 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

During the internship the intern will understand urban development challenges in the countries of the Arab Region and assist in identifying urban development priorities and support the development of urban development and planning strategies that facilitates inclusive cities that are economically and culturally vibrant and environmentally sustainable. The intern will support the mobilization of the Arab Region for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 11: ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’. 

The intern will particularly support the Regional Public Space Programme in achieving its overall goals. Under the direct supervision of the Public Space Expert the intern will:

-Support the overall documentation of workshops, meetings and activities that fall under the public space programme. Document the processes and the implementation of all pilot projects as well as regional exchange and learning events;
-Support in the production of communications, advocacy materials and promising practices on public space which are specifically tailored to the Arab States;
-Support the participatory design processes of pilot projects, in terms of documentation of processes as well as in engaging with local communities and local government in the implementation of the public space projects on the city level;
-Support the establishment of a regional platform on public space for knowledge sharing especially in terms of:
-Compiling case studies/best practices from all over the region (Arab states).
-Process and organise the information in a logical and sequential manner.
-Identify the translation needs and carry it out after consulting with the Public Space expert.
-Communicate with the knowledge management officer and propose cases that could be disseminated and design its format and carry out after consulting with the Public Space expert.
-Communicate with UN Women ROAS for the purpose of this regional platform and liaise with the team designated for the Public Space from UN Women ROAS.
-Initiate and carry out independent research on public space projects and experiences and gather relevant information from diverse sources;
-Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.;
-Provide administrative and substantive support to meetings and conferences through identifying and contacting participants, preparing background documents and presentations, handling logistics and organisation;
-Cooperate with the Communications and Knowledge Management team to support UN-Habitat’s online presence in Arabic especially on, but not limited to, public space by drafting and/or translating web stories, and updating social media and website;
-Undertake other duties as may be assigned by the Public Space Expert and/or Regional Director.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; 

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred area of study:
University degree (BA/BSc.), and enrolled in a post-graduate programme, or recently graduated from master’s programme, in a field of studies related to urban development such as urban planning, architecture, social science and/or development studies. Good writing and research skills is an asset.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
